The largest teachers union in New York City has joined the opposition against a proposed $4 billion Caesars casino resort in Times Square.

Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers representing nearly 200,000 education professionals, expressed concern that a casino would harm the Theater District and diminish Broadway's educational value for students. With six public schools within walking distance of the proposed site, the union believes a gambling establishment would be inappropriate for the area.

The proposed casino would transform 1515 Broadway, currently home to the Minskoff Theater and various media companies, into an integrated resort. The project, led by Caesars Entertainment and SL Green, faces growing resistance from the No Times Square Casino Coalition, which includes 25 neighborhood organizations, businesses, and community groups.

However, the project has garnered support from 17 labor unions, including the Actors Equity Association and American Federation of Musicians. Caesars representatives argue the resort would boost Broadway show attendance and pledge millions in theater tickets for NYC students.

The Times Square proposal is competing against bids from major casino operators including MGM Resorts, Genting, Hard Rock International, Las Vegas Sands, Mohegan, Wynn Resorts, and Bally's. New York's Gaming Facility Location Board is expected to select three winners by the end of next year.

Times Square, which attracts approximately 50 million visitors annually, remains at the center of this controversial development proposal that could significantly impact the future of Manhattan's entertainment district.
