Las Vegas Casino Milestones: Major Events That Shaped the Strip in 2024
Las Vegas' most significant casino events in 2024 marked historic changes and challenges for the gaming industry.
Las Vegas achieved a major milestone in February by hosting its first Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium. The event generated record-breaking sports betting handle of $185.6 million and delivered nearly $1 billion in economic impact, with over $600 million in visitor spending.
July brought challenges as Las Vegas hit a record-breaking temperature of 120°F. The same month saw the closure of the iconic Mirage casino, which will be transformed into the Hard Rock Las Vegas by 2027.
In August, Resorts World faced serious regulatory issues when the Nevada Gaming Control Board filed a 12-count complaint for anti-money laundering violations. The case connected to several gambling scandals, including the high-profile Shohei Ohtani interpreter case.
September saw Wynn Las Vegas agree to a record $130.13 million settlement with the Department of Justice over money laundering violations. The UFC held its first event at the Sphere, generating $22 million in gate receipts.
The historic Tropicana casino was imploded in October to make way for a planned Oakland A's stadium and new Bally's resort. The same month, Strip casino revenue declined for the fourth consecutive month.
The year ended with significant regulatory actions, including former Resorts World president Scott Sibella surrendering his gaming license in December. The FTC also implemented new rules requiring transparent disclosure of resort fees, which can reach $55 per night at luxury properties.
