The Gift Responsibly Campaign has reached a historic milestone with 74 lotteries and 101 community organizations joining worldwide for 2024. This initiative, led by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and supported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL), focuses on preventing lottery tickets from being given as gifts to minors.

Research indicates that early exposure to gambling during childhood significantly increases the risk of developing gambling problems later in life. This exposure often occurs through well-meaning adults giving lottery products as gifts.

During the holiday season, participating organizations will:

  • Educate communities about the risks of gifting lottery tickets to children
  • Raise awareness about youth gambling dangers
  • Promote responsible gambling practices for legal-age participants

Campaign activities include:

  • Public service announcements
  • Social media messaging
  • Digital advertising
  • In-store signage
  • Retailer training
  • Educational outreach

For the seventh straight year, 100% of eligible U.S. and Canadian lotteries have joined the campaign, along with 19 international lotteries. The initiative has received endorsements from major lottery associations worldwide, including the World Lottery Association and European Lotteries.

"This year's record participation demonstrates our growing commitment to protecting young people from gambling risks," says Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director. "While our communities and legal gambling ages may vary globally, our message remains clear: lottery tickets are not appropriate gifts for children or teens."
