The violation primarily involved 42 in-person bets placed through self-service kiosks on February 23-24, 2022, covering 12 college basketball games. Bettors were allowed to continue wagering even after games had ended. William Hill paid out over $5,000 in winnings before discovering the error, which they attributed to their third-party supplier, OpenBet.
Additional violations included accepting bets on two boxing matches that had already concluded in June 2022. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) Interim Director Mary Jo Flaherty signed the settlement order on November 19.
The William Hill sportsbooks previously operated at several Atlantic City casinos, including Caesars, Harrah's, and Tropicana, but have since been rebranded to Caesars Sportsbook. Ocean Casino Resort, formerly partnered with William Hill, now operates under Fanatics following its partial acquisition by Ilitch Holdings.
In a separate case, the DGE fined sports betting provider Amelco $10,000 for allowing unauthorized bets on the 2024 presidential election and games involving Seton Hall University, which violated state regulations prohibiting wagers on in-state colleges.
