Nevada remains the leader in per-capita sports betting, with the average resident wagering $1,815 annually - nearly triple the national average, according to a recent study by Gamdom Casino. This figure significantly outpaces New Jersey ($1,398) and New York ($1,087), which rank second and third respectively.

Despite ranking fifth in overall sports betting revenue behind New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, Nevada's per-capita leadership is particularly notable given two key constraints:

  • Mandatory in-person registration for mobile betting accounts
  • Absence of major operators FanDuel and DraftKings due to state regulations requiring sportsbook operators to have physical casino partnerships

The top 10 states for per-capita sports betting are:

  1. Nevada ($1,815)
  2. New Jersey ($1,398)
  3. New York ($1,087)
  4. Massachusetts
  5. Arizona
  6. Maryland
  7. Illinois
  8. Colorado
  9. Kansas
  10. Iowa

Notable mentions:

  • Pennsylvania ranks 19th with $484 annual per-capita wagering despite being a major market in total handle and revenue
  • South Dakota has the lowest per-capita spending at $7.63, likely due to limiting sports betting to tribal casinos and Deadwood venues

Currently, sports betting is legal in 38 states plus Washington, DC, with Missouri set to join in 2024. While Nevada has lost its position as the overall US sports betting leader since the 2018 Supreme Court PASPA ruling, its per-capita statistics demonstrate the state's continued dominance in sports wagering engagement.
