The prevalence of this search in Nevada is particularly notable given that the state has a higher-than-average rate of epilepsy, with 31,000 residents living with the condition. Nevada's epilepsy rate ranges from 1,047 to 1,098 per 100,000 people, exceeding the national average.
Other states showed interesting patterns in their most-searched spellings:
- Idaho and West Virginia residents frequently searched how to spell their own state names
- New Jersey commonly searched "thousand"
- Pennsylvania often checked "reimbursement"
- Three states (Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota) frequently searched "beautiful/beautifully"
- Some unique searches included "boutonniere" (Utah), "multiplication" (North Carolina), and "paparazzi" (Minnesota)
"Many of the words on the list are certainly challenging and may have different variations, so double checking and ensuring you have the correct spelling in documents is paramount," noted an Essay Hub spokesperson.
The study revealed some unexpected findings across the country, with Alaskans checking "cheese," Californians verifying "tomato," and New Mexicans searching "bologna," demonstrating that even seemingly simple words can prove challenging for many Americans.
