Delta Air Lines has announced a partnership with DraftKings, introducing gaming elements to their inflight experience. The collaboration was revealed by Delta CEO Ed Bastian during his keynote presentation at CES 2024 in Las Vegas.

While specific details remain limited, the partnership likely focuses on play-money games and cross-promotional activities, as federal regulations strictly prohibit gambling on US carriers and flights entering or leaving the United States. Section 41311 of the Federal Aviation Administration Authorization Act explicitly bans gambling devices on aircraft in foreign air transportation.

The potential value of inflight gambling is significant. A 1996 US Department of Transportation study estimated airlines could generate approximately $2 million per aircraft annually (adjusted for inflation) through gambling activities. For an airline of Delta's size, with nearly 1,000 aircraft, this could represent substantial revenue.

Historical precedent shows both opportunities and challenges in airline gambling:

  • Singapore Airlines pioneered inflight gambling in 1981 with slot machines but discontinued them due to passenger traffic issues
  • UK airlines currently limit gaming to scratch cards, avoiding full gambling implementation
  • Concerns exist about gambling's potential to affect passenger behavior and safety

While DraftKings CEO Jason Robbins attended the announcement, the company has not yet officially detailed the partnership terms. The collaboration could position both companies advantageously if regulations around inflight gambling change in the future.

Delta and DraftKings have been contacted for additional details about the partnership's scope and implementation timeline.
