Cleveland Browns Set to Introduce White Helmets in 2022 as Part of Uniform Evolution
The Cleveland Browns are planning a significant uniform update for 2022, teasing an announcement for July 24. The team will unveil throwback uniforms featuring drop shadow numbers and a 1946 patch to celebrate their 75th anniversary season.
While throwback white helmets would complete the authentic 1946 look (as worn by Paul Brown's teams from 1946-1951), the NFL's one-helmet rule prevents this in 2021. However, the league has approved alternate helmets for throwback uniforms starting in 2022.
Current uniform modification options include:
- White or grey facemask alternates (previously used in 2000s)
- Adding player numbers to the helmet sides (used 1957-1959 and 2006-2008)
- Maintaining the orange helmet with modified elements
The Browns cannot change their primary uniforms worn in 2020 for another four years due to NFL rules. However, the 75th anniversary provides an opportunity to introduce alternate helmets in 2022.
The prospect of Baker Mayfield leading the Browns in meaningful December games wearing an all-white uniform with a white helmet creates an exciting vision for the future. Though the white helmets must wait until 2022, the throwback uniforms will help celebrate the team's rich history in 2021.
