Baker Mayfield's contract extension with the Cleveland Browns appears imminent, according to his agent Jack Mills. Despite Mayfield's earlier statements about not rushing the process, Mills told WKNR's Tony Grossi that a deal is expected this summer.

Recent quarterback contracts, including Dak Prescott's $160 million deal and Patrick Mahomes' $450 million extension, have established a clear market framework. This eliminates the need to wait for other 2018 draft class quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson to sign their extensions first.

The Browns currently have Mayfield under contract through 2022 after exercising his fifth-year option worth $18.86 million. The anticipated extension is likely to be a 4-5 year deal with an average annual value around $35 million.

Key factors supporting the extension:

  • Mayfield led Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002
  • Secured the team's first playoff victory since 1994
  • Both parties have expressed mutual interest in continuing the relationship
  • At age 26, Mayfield is entering his prime years

The Browns will need to manage their salary cap carefully, as other key players like Denzel Ward, Nick Chubb, and Wyatt Teller will also require extensions soon. However, securing their franchise quarterback remains the immediate priority.
