Temple Basketball Star Hysier Miller Under Federal Investigation for Betting Scandal
A federal investigation into game manipulation is underway involving former Temple University basketball standout Hysier Miller, according to ESPN reports. The 22-year-old guard, who led scoring for the Owls in the 2023-24 season, was dismissed from Virginia Tech's program following suspicious betting patterns.

The investigation centers on a March 7 game between the Owls and UAB Blazers, where U.S. Integrity flagged an unusual six-point shift in the point spread hours before the game. This unexpected movement prompted many sportsbooks to suspend betting. Miller scored only eight points that night, significantly below his 15.9-point season average.
Miller's attorney, Jason Bologna, stated that his client has fully cooperated with the NCAA investigation, participating in a five-hour interview and providing requested documentation. Miller has not been charged with any crime.
This case joins a growing list of college betting scandals since sports betting legalization, including incidents at Alabama, Iowa, and Iowa State. The regulated betting environment has made such violations more detectable.
In a related professional case, Toronto Raptors' Jontay Porter received a lifetime NBA ban in April 2024 for deliberately underperforming in two games to benefit a gambling syndicate. Porter later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, becoming the first NBA player banned for gambling since Jack Molinas in 1954.
