Opposition to the proposed Wynn NYC casino project has gained significant momentum, with the "Protect the High Line" group now counting over 5,000 supporters across New York City. The organization, formed five months ago, aims to protect the iconic elevated park from Related Cos. and Wynn Resorts' $12 billion Western Rail Yards development plan.

The group's primary concerns include:

  • Proposed towers blocking High Line views
  • Deviation from Related's 2009 city agreement, which promised 3,454-5,700 housing units (current plan only includes 1,500)

Alan van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line, emphasizes that supporters represent diverse communities throughout NYC, not just the immediate High Line area. Recent polling commissioned by the group indicates that most West Side residents oppose a casino in their neighborhood.

However, the project has garnered support from:

  • Labor groups anticipating job creation
  • Advocates seeing potential revenue for homeless services

Related Cos. has stated that without the casino component, major development at the Western Rail Yards is unlikely to proceed. The proposed Wynn New York casino would be competing for one of three available downstate casino licenses.

The Protect the High Line campaign continues to advocate for development that:

  • Respects the 2009 rezoning agreement
  • Preserves the park's integrity
  • Prioritizes public benefit
  • Maintains commitments to affordable housing
