Mohegan is pivoting its operational focus while expanding globally, recently opening the $1.6 billion Inspire integrated resort in South Korea near Seoul's Incheon International Airport. The resort features 1,275 rooms, a 15,000-seat arena, an indoor water park, and a casino with 150 table games and 373 slots.

The company has withdrawn from management contracts in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and Washington to focus on wholly-owned ventures. CEO Ray Pineault sees South Korea as a strategic market with significant tourism growth potential.

Currently, Mohegan's top priority is securing one of three New York casino licenses. Their proposed Freedom Plaza project, partnered with Soloviev Group, would be located near the UN headquarters in Manhattan. The development includes:

  • 280,000 sq ft casino floor
  • 1,251 hotel rooms
  • 56,000 sq ft conference space
  • 30 restaurants and bars
  • 1,325 residential apartments (500+ affordable units)
  • 4.8 acres of public green space

Competing against major operators like MGM Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, and Caesars Entertainment, Mohegan differentiates itself through community-focused additions like affordable housing and public spaces. The company's culture, based on the Spirit of Aquai philosophy, emphasizes respect and community engagement.

Current frontrunners for NY licenses include MGM and Genting, who operate existing racinos in Yonkers and Queens. The New York Gaming Facility Location Board will announce winners by December 1, 2025.
