Massachusetts Launches Official Seal to Identify Legal Sports Betting Operators
Licensed Massachusetts sports betting operators must now display an official Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) seal on their digital platforms to help consumers distinguish between legal and illegal betting options.
The seal requirement is part of the state's efforts to combat illegal offshore gambling and promote regulated, responsible gaming. All seven licensed operators in Massachusetts must comply with strict security measures, including:
- Data and financial security protocols
- Know Your Customer (KYC) verification
- Responsible gaming initiatives
- Clear display of the MGC seal of approval

Commissioner Eileen O'Brien emphasized that this measure helps protect Massachusetts residents' personal and financial information, which is only safeguarded within the legal marketplace.
Recent Crackdown on Illegal Operators
The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office recently issued a cease-and-desist notice to Bovada, an offshore gambling operator, for illegally targeting state residents. In response, Bovada added Massachusetts to its list of restricted states, which now includes:
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Kansas
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Nevada
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Washington, D.C.
- West Virginia
The Attorney General's Office highlighted that unlicensed operators like Bovada pose significant risks to consumers, including lack of addiction safeguards, insufficient protection against underage gambling, and unreliable access to funds.
