Massachusetts Gaming Commission Probes Sports Betting Limits with Data Request from Operators
Massachusetts sports betting regulators are seeking comprehensive data from licensed operators regarding player limitations to inform potential new regulations.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission approved a data request to the state's seven licensed sports betting operators to determine:
- Total number of limited customers
- Percentage of players facing limitations
- Correlation between winning behavior and limitations
- Treatment of VIP players showing losing behavior
The initiative follows two industry roundtables, with the second meeting in September addressing operator no-shows from the first May session. During these discussions, operators emphasized that user limitations primarily target a small percentage of customers who may exploit sportsbooks, rather than targeting winning players exclusively.
Key operator claims included:
- Over 90% of winning customers face no limitations (Fanatics)
- More than half of limited users were "net losing" when restricted
- Limitation decisions consider responsible gaming factors, behavior patterns, and platform exploitation attempts
The commission will analyze the collected data to potentially implement new regulations, including:
- Mandatory notification requirements for limited patrons
- Regular reporting requirements to the MGC
- Standardized protocols for implementing player limitations

The data collection will begin in the coming weeks, with findings expected to guide future regulatory decisions regarding Massachusetts sports betting player limitations.
