Family members alerted hotel security after discovering a suicide note at Reyes' California residence. When security attempted to enter his room, they heard what appeared to be a gun being racked and immediately retreated.
After failed negotiations, SWAT deployed explosives to breach the door. Reyes charged at officers while holding a shotgun, leading Officer Zachary Adam to fire a fatal shot. Though the shotgun was later found to be unloaded, Reyes also possessed a handgun. The incident is under routine review.
