The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on September 17, 2017, when Muhammad and two accomplices entered the casino (now DraftKings at Casino Queen) wielding rifles. Security guard and local firefighter Larry Weber was shot by Muhammad during the robbery, sustaining critical internal injuries that required two surgeries. Weber eventually recovered and returned to work.
The robbers fired shots into the air, forced employees to the ground, and stole $47,000 from multiple cash drawers. The stolen money was later recovered near an abandoned getaway vehicle in East St. Louis.
Muhammad was arrested in January 2019 in Cobb County, Georgia, by the U.S. Marshal's Service. His two accomplices remain at large. Following a weeklong trial at St. Clair County Court in Illinois, Muhammad was convicted of:
- Armed robbery (Class X felony)
- Aggravated battery with a firearm (Class X felony)
- Unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon (Class 2 felony)
Muhammad faces up to 60 years in prison at sentencing. The conviction resulted from a collaborative effort between Illinois State Police, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Illinois, and the St. Clair County State's Attorney's office.
