The incident began Friday night when officers investigated a reported sexual assault and kidnapping in Sunrise Manor. Mendoza fled in a Toyota RAV4, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended when his vehicle crashed into a palm tree on North Las Vegas Boulevard.

After fleeing on foot, Mendoza allegedly fired at an officer, who returned fire and wounded him in the left leg. Despite his injury, Mendoza escaped but was later arrested Sunday on Linn Lane in Sunrise Manor.

Following treatment at University Medical Center, Mendoza was booked into Clark County Detention Center, where he remains in custody.

Officer Marcos Gomez, 33, who discharged his weapon during the incident, has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending review. No officers were injured during the exchange.

This marks the 14th officer-involved shooting in LVMPD's jurisdiction this year. The case has been transferred to local prosecutors, and Mendoza faces significant prison time if convicted.
