Las Vegas Sands has donated $15 million to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to establish the Institute of Chinese Language and Culture, marking one of the company's largest recent philanthropic contributions.

The Sands Institute, approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents on December 5, will be located in UNLV's renovated Maryland Administrative Building. It aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for Chinese cultural education and exchange.

The institute will offer:

  • Mandarin language courses
  • Cultural programming including film screenings
  • Art exhibitions
  • Musical performances
  • Student and faculty exchange programs

Robert Goldstein, Sands CEO, emphasized the initiative's importance in enhancing Chinese cultural literacy and fostering intercultural dialogue in Las Vegas.

While Sands no longer operates casinos in Las Vegas following the $6.25 billion sale of The Venetian, Palazzo, and Sands Expo in 2021, the company maintains strong ties to Asia. As the world's largest casino operator by market capitalization ($40+ billion), Sands operates integrated resorts in Macau and Singapore, where it's investing $3.5 billion and $8 billion respectively in expansion projects.

The company, controlled by Dr. Miriam Adelson, is also pursuing new opportunities in the U.S., including a casino license bid at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island and potential gaming developments in Texas. Dr. Adelson recently acquired a 73% stake in the NBA Dallas Mavericks, potentially positioning the company for future gaming opportunities in Texas should legislation permit.
