Las Vegas has activated 22 new surveillance cameras along streets intersecting the Fremont Street Experience (FSE), designed to scan license plates of stolen or wanted vehicles and instantly alert law enforcement of any matches. The installation came just before the New Year's Eve celebration.

According to city officials, these cameras are strictly limited to identifying stolen vehicles and cannot be used for traffic enforcement like speeding or red light violations.

This new system adds to FSE's existing comprehensive security infrastructure, which includes:

  • Over 300 video surveillance cameras monitoring the LED canopy area
  • ShotPoint gunshot detection system (installed 2020)
  • AI-powered "smart safety platform" (installed 2022) that detects:
    • Fires
    • Intrusions
    • Unattended bags
    • Vandalism and graffiti
    • Fights
    • Loitering
    • Crowd size and movement patterns

The FSE has confirmed that none of these security systems employ facial recognition technology. These measures aim to enhance public safety in one of Las Vegas's most popular tourist destinations, which attracts millions of visitors annually.

The combination of license plate readers, gunshot detection, and AI-powered surveillance represents the latest evolution in Las Vegas's approach to public safety, particularly in high-traffic tourist areas.
