Hippodrome Office Building Opposes Caesars Times Square Casino Project
The Hippodrome office building has joined the growing opposition against the proposed Times Square casino hotel project in New York City.

The Class A office building, located at 1120 Avenue of the Americas, argues that the casino project - a partnership between Caesars Entertainment, SL Green, and Jay-Z's Roc Nation - would negatively impact nearby office tenants and disrupt the area's existing dynamics.
Andy Gottesman, principal of The Hippodrome, emphasized that Times Square is already thriving and questioned the need for such development. He cited concerns about congestion, disruption, and potential threats to the balance between office workers, theater-goers, and tourists.
The opposition follows similar concerns raised by the United Federation of Teachers two weeks prior, who opposed the casino on grounds that it could disrupt Times Square's role as an "educational goldmine" for children.
Gottesman pointed to Vornado Realty Trust's recent decision to abandon casino plans near Madison Square Garden and Penn Station as precedent, suggesting that commercial tenants may be hesitant to lease space near gaming venues.
The Times Square casino proposal has divided local opinion, with the No Times Square Casino Coalition, comprising approximately three dozen local businesses and community groups, opposing the project. However, the proposal has garnered support from various business entities and labor groups, who emphasize the potential creation of thousands of union jobs.
The debate comes as New York City prepares to award three downstate casino licenses, with multiple gaming companies partnering with real estate firms due to limited suitable commercial properties in the city. Among other proposals, Wynn Resorts and Related Cos. are pursuing an integrated resort project at the Western Rail Yards on Manhattan's West Side.
