Former NBA Player Jontay Porter's Fraud Sentencing Delayed Until 2025
The sentencing date for former NBA player Jontay Porter has been rescheduled to May 20, 2025. Porter, who previously played for the Toronto Raptors, pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Porter admitted to manipulating two NBA games for gambling purposes while playing with the Raptors. The incidents occurred on January 26 and March 20, 2024, when he deliberately removed himself from games citing illness or injury. In both cases, he played less than five minutes and scored no points, resulting in successful under bets.
The NBA responded by imposing a lifetime ban on Porter in April 2024, marking the first such ban since the legalization of sports gambling in the United States.
Legal expert Peter Czegledy suggests Porter faces a severe sentence despite his cooperation with authorities. "This is a high-profile case, involving premeditated and repeat misconduct over a period of time by a public individual who should be acting as a role model," Czegledy told Canadian Press. While Porter's defense has cited gambling addiction as a mitigating factor, experts anticipate the sentence will likely include both prison time and substantial financial penalties.
