Environmental Review for $6B Long Island Casino Project Set for Release
The Nassau County Legislative Rules Committee unanimously approved the release of an environmental impact study for Las Vegas Sands' proposed $6 billion casino hotel project at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY.

The study's release marks a crucial step forward, as environmental concerns previously led to legal challenges. Last year, New York State Supreme Court Justice Sarika Kapoor ruled in favor of Hofstra University, citing violations of open meeting laws and potential oversights in the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA).
The lease transfer agreement between Nassau County and Las Vegas Sands cannot be finalized until the environmental review is complete. This review addresses several concerns, including:
- Impact on Long Island's drinking water supply
- Long-term environmental consequences
- Local infrastructure effects
The project faces competition from nearly a dozen gaming companies vying for three New York City-area casino licenses, with decisions expected late next year. Despite some controversy, the Las Vegas Sands bid is considered one of the most credible proposals.
Following the committee's approval, the full legislature will vote on the matter, after which a public hearing will be scheduled. This process ensures residents can voice concerns about the integrated resort's potential environmental impact, as mandated by the court ruling.
