Located in Midtown Manhattan near Herald Square, Keens has been serving customers since 1885 when Albert Keen first purchased the 16,000-square-foot property. The restaurant is renowned for its 26-ounce mutton chops (now made with lamb) and has hosted notable figures including Theodore Roosevelt and Babe Ruth in its famous Pipe Club.
The steakhouse, previously owned by radiation oncologist George Schwarz's estate since his death in 2016, will maintain its historic character under Fertitta's ownership. "This is a New York jewel," Fertitta told Bloomberg, committing to preserve the restaurant's legacy and exceptional dining experience.
Fertitta, whose net worth exceeds $10 billion, owns Landry's restaurant group (including Morton's, Del Frisco's, and Mastro's), the Houston Rockets NBA team, and the Golden Nugget casino chain. He recently became Wynn Resorts' largest shareholder and is developing a new 43-story, 2,420-room casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
Keens General Manager Bonnie Jenkins expressed confidence in the transition, stating that former owner George Schwarz "would be happy to know that our new owner, Tilman Fertitta, is committed to maintaining the legacy of our historic brand."
