Bengals WR Tee Higgins Poised for Breakout 2021 Season After Strong Rookie Year
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins is positioned for a breakout season in 2021 after an impressive rookie campaign. In his first NFL season, Higgins recorded 908 yards, 67 catches, and 6 touchdowns while building chemistry with quarterback Joe Burrow.
Higgins spent the offseason improving his conditioning, adding muscle, and increasing his speed. After completing minicamp, Burrow praised his receiver, stating "Tee's gonna have a big year" and expressing excitement about the offensive weapons at his disposal.
The duo showed promising chemistry in 2020, highlighted by a 67-yard completion against the Colts in Week 6. Their connection was interrupted when Burrow suffered a season-ending injury, but a full offseason program together under head coach Zac Taylor provides opportunity to strengthen their rapport.
The addition of rookie receiver Ja'Marr Chase alongside Higgins and slot receiver Tyler Boyd gives Cincinnati one of the NFL's most talented receiving corps. Rather than limiting Higgins, Chase's presence should reduce double-coverage and allow Higgins to face more favorable matchups against opposing teams' secondary cornerbacks.
Offensive coordinator Brian Callahan praised Higgins as a "true outside wide receiver that can go win one-on-one." With improved conditioning, reduced defensive attention, and better protection from an upgraded offensive line, Higgins has all the ingredients for a stellar second season catching passes from Burrow.
