The Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers for a conditional fifth-round pick that could become a fourth-round selection based on playing time. This marks the end of Mayfield's four-year tenure in Cleveland, where he went 30-31 including playoffs.

Mayfield initially brought hope to Cleveland, leading them to their first playoff victory since 1994 and showing promise as a franchise quarterback. He had strong weapons around him, including Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Odell Beckham Jr., and Jarvis Landry, plus a top offensive line under Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski.

However, his performance declined significantly in 2021, partly due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The Browns went just 1-7 against winning teams that season, with Mayfield's four-interception game on Christmas Day proving particularly costly. Off-field issues also emerged, with teammates noting a lack of team unity and leadership.

The Browns ultimately chose to move on, acquiring Deshaun Watson despite his 22 civil lawsuits alleging misconduct. Cleveland will pay over $10 million of Mayfield's $18 million contract, with Carolina responsible for $5 million.

In Carolina, Mayfield joins a team that has cycled through multiple quarterbacks recently. He'll have weapons like Christian McCaffrey and D.J. Moore to work with as he attempts to revive his career under head coach Matt Rhule, whose job security likely depends on Mayfield's success.

While Mayfield's brash personality and swagger helped make him the #1 overall pick in 2018, those same traits ultimately contributed to his departure from Cleveland. His success in Carolina may depend on finding the right balance between confidence and leadership.
